Induced seismicity and microseismicity
Overview: The course combines an overview of the general workflow for microseismic event processing and analysis and the physics behind earthquake induction. Points covered over the two sessions include:
- Overview of Earthquakes and microseismicity, scaling, quick overview of the workflow for a microseismic processing project
- The mechanics of fracturing. Mechanisms driving the induction of microseismic events
- Seismic magnitude
- Induced seismicity cases: early examples of dam-induced seismicity, hydraulic fracturing-induced seismicity, overview of traffic-light systems.
- Hands-on examples. Students will have access to a 5-day licence for InSite-HF to work and visualise example case studies. A brief introduction to the use of the software with the pre-configured examples is included.
- Analysis, imaging, characterisation, and quantification of the induced fracture network. This includes tutorials with a laboratory sample case and the hydraulic fracturing of a tight-gas formation
The course will be delivered online and includes hands-on tutorials, handouts in electronic format and a temporary 7-day licence of InSite-HF. This is a one (1) day course split over two (2) days; sessions will be 13:00 to 17:00 (GMT) on both days.
